“Your research assignment for the semester will consist of an original, scholarly‐written research paper due on Tuesday, April 19th promptly before class.
Using their primary source topic as a starting point, students will complete a 3 to 4 page research paper/object analysis, investigating in depth one single object designed by their chosen designer or group,its different characteristics, and the ways in which the object’s design expresses the designer’s or group’s ideas. So depending on the focus of your primary source,in an object analysis you might consider an object’s appearance and materials; style; by whom and how it was made; the social, economic, political, and cultural contexts that give it meaning; how the object historically relates to others of its type (or is it something entirely new); its function (if any); its reception and the market for whom it was made; and production strategies, as well as ones for marketing it.
