History of Fire Prevention

The historical influences of fire prevention directly influence the fire service today. The Roman Empire assigned slaves to perform nighttime fire patrols, English cities in the 1500s attempted to ban wooden chimneys and thatched roofs while mandating some of the first firewalls between buildings. Major conflagrations that occurred in Boston before the Revolutionary War or the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 all shaped the American fire prevention process into what it is today. The landmark “America Burning” whitepaper in 1973 identified a strong need for fire prevention activities to take place at the local level.
