This is a very easy to administer screening that addresses the major areas and problems that can complicate and increase risk factors for the elderly. Any ?yes? answer needs to be explored further.
Discuss each area of the screening tool as to why it is important and how problems in the area could negatively impact the health and safety of the older adult and increase the risk for complications.
Discuss the possible outcomes if these possible problem areas were not assessed and interventions initiated early. Knowing that chronic illness is not static, discuss how screening tests such as this can assist in evaluating a change of condition.
This tool is intended for use with the elderly. Discuss other assessments and screenings would be appropriate for use to detect areas of concern in with young children and adolescents with chronic illness.
Administer this SPICES screening tool on an appropriate individual of your choice. This can be a friend, family member or neighbor, but If you decide to perform this in a healthcare setting or place of employment, be sure to request permission from your supervisor prior to selecting an individual. Maintain confidentiality by referring to this person by initials only. Are there any risk factors or areas of concern? Discuss what you learned about the individual from this screening test about this person?s level of health and what evidence based interventions would you suggest.
