Homeland Security

Part of homeland security is preparing for and responding to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.   By almost anyone’s measure, we did a less than optimal job of responding to Katrina.  Following Katrina, many changes were made to address the issues that surfaced including changing the NFP to the NRF, developing and improving NIMS and ICS,  clarifying roles and responsibilities,  and creating policies.

For this assignment, you will prepare a presentation for your classmates about one of the topics/issues/organizations listed below. Your presentation will explain the issue, organization or idea and explain, if appropriate,  what changed as a result of lessons learned in Katrina.  Explain, if appropriate,  what the organization or idea contributes to the response community or system.

  • The change from NRP to NRF
  • The change to  a whole community approach to planning
  • The Strategic National Stockpile and the National Disaster Medical System
  • Nuclear Incident Response Team
  • CBRN Countermeasures Programs
  • Federal Computer Incident Response Center
  • National Communications System
  • National Infrastructure Protection Center
  • NIMS
  • ICS
  • Incident Management Teams
  • Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act (PKEMRA) of 2006
  • Healthcare system preparedness
  • Disaster logistics
  • Special topics wth instructor approval

Your presentation can be in the form of a video, a Powerpoint presentation with a voice over track,  or another professor approved means. These will be shared with the class. Sources of support and citation are needed.  Please let me know if you would like assistance in figuring out how to make your presentation.
