Person- in- environment perspective

Person in environment theory is used in study of social work. It explains that a person behavior can be largely influenced and understood by looking individual environment and their past experiences. There also other models used in area of social work which include medical and biopsychosocial model. Medical theory tries to study and check the complaint, examination of the problem, testing and diagnosis and making follow ups (Mishna, Bogo, Root, Sawyer, & Kassabri, 2012). On the hand, biopsychosocial model tries to examine how the problem could be attributed to the patient environment. Biopsychosocial focuses more on the environment rather than checking the medical causes. Under medical model, the condition of the disease is of great importance. Psychological and external factors which in one-way influence behavior of the patient, is given less attention (Reamet, 2013).

The person in environment heavily relies on the principle of biopsychosocial model in many ways. This is contributed to the notion that you cannot understand one’s behavior without considering the environment they operate in (Massachusetts General Hospital). The environment comprises of social, family, economical or physical environment. It is good to note that, in future, biopsychosocial model may be compatible with medical social profession since it will help them to understand more concerning the patient`s past experiences and thus able to handle patients with a lot of care (NASW, 2003). To sum up, by understanding the past environment of the patient, helps one to have more information and thus he/she is able to address those issues in a more sensitive way, ensuring that no harm is inflicted. This helps the patient to recover very fast.

Hello Cheraldo,

Thank you for your post.  The biopsychosocial model and the medical model do differ.  The medical model focuses solely on the disease while the biopsychosocial model focuses on all other nonmedical aspects of the client (Gehlert & Browne, 2012).  One model is not worse than the other.  They each serve their purpose with various professions.  The information the medical social worker can provide to the medical team about the client or to the client from the medical team helps to bring everything together.  Both model work to aid the client in the most in-depth way possible.

Cheraldo,

Great post! I agree that the medical model focuses on disease itself and how biopsychosocial looks at the environment. “Biopsychosocial is used to indicate an approach to health service delivery that addresses the psychological and social aspects of health and treatment that includes behavioral and environmental factors’ (Gehlert, 2011, p. 21) I feel that person-environment focuses on system’s theory as it looks at everything around the person.  I found your post insightful when you stated that we have to understand the patient’s past to have more information to address issues for the patient to recover fast.
