Research Essay
Word Count: 1650 words
Due: 12.00pm Monday, 5th August 2016

Students can write their own essay question in consultation with the subject coordinator. In Week One (6th – 12th June) students will pitch an idea for their final research essay on the discussion forum (see the ‘Forum Posts – Detailed Instructions’ document on LMS). After the 13th June, the subject coordinator will read your post and make comments about how it might be refined and focused into a manageable research topic. They may also suggest avenues of inquiry to help you start the research process. You should continue to converse with the subject coordinator through the forum until a final essay question has been developed.

Once you have your essay question you can start the research process. You will come across primary and secondary sources week to week and you should make a note when you find a source that can be included in your research essay so you can locate it easily when you come to write your essay. Reading your peers’ posts on the weekly forums and watching your group members’ presentations will be a great source of research material. Another repository of sources is the ‘More Readings’ tile on the LMS, which includes a large number of sources divided into topics.

Presentation Guidelines:
1. Please include your essay question at the top of the page
2. Please double-space your work
3. Please include a bibliography and in text references in the La Trobe Harvard style
4. Please ensure the bibliography is listed in alphabetical order by surname
5. Use a 12 pt easy to read font (ie. Arial or Times New Roman)
6. Margins should be at least 2cm (top/bottom and left/right)
