Read the following New York Times article that describes the LIGO project and its detection of gravitational waves.

Within the article are a number of short videos and additional material. Please be sure to listen to the sound of the “What Two Black Holes Colliding Sounds Like”l. Also go through “An Earthling’s Guide to Black Holes” and “What is General Relativity”.
In your writing, please be sure to include the following:
1) What is LIGO – not just what the acronym stands for
2) The historical story of who did what and when. (Starting with Einstein)
3) Your personal take on the fact that black holes are physical observable things, and they are not just part of science fiction. If this is a new realization for you, describe your reaction. If you already knew this, describe how you would explain this to someone who did not know this.
