Humanities: The Big Picture

Humanities: The Big Picture

THE VALUE OF THE HUMANITIES
In Kate Cottle’s Ted Talk, she reflects on the Humanities classes she took in college. In the video, she will discuss practical reasons for studying the Humanities. Consider her ideas and think about how you might consider the content of this course. What tips might be helpful for working through this class? Have you heard any of these ideas before? It might be fun to watch the video now and then return to it at the end of the semester. How have her ideas come true? How might you better understand what she’s saying? In this course, we’ll frequently be making “contemporary connections.” What contemporary connections are being made in the video? What connections can you make?

THE HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF WRITING
Strictly speaking, this is NOT a writing class. Yes, you’ll be expected to write. However, some times it’s frustrating to fully appreciate the importance of writing. In this Ted Talk, Seth Lerer discusses writing, reading, the body, and technology. All of this has a direct impact on how we engage with the Humanities. As you watch the video, consider how the ideas he discusses change throughout time. What is your experience with writing? How does writing affect you or your understanding of Humanities? It might be fun to return to this video toward the end of the semester and reconsider the the points made in the video as they relate to the course. Moving forward, however, what is Lerer saying that might have an impact on our understanding of the Humanities and what we might expect from this course? What terms and ideas will be useful for understanding the Humanities? In this course, we’ll frequently be making “contemporary connections.” What contemporary connections are being made in the video? What connections can you make?
