How to appreciate Architecture

Appreciating architecture is a multi-sensory experience which requires the person to not only move around the art work, but also to move through it and experiencing it from the inside as it induces bodily and emotional feelings that would help us understand the art work.

Every art form has a different way to be fully appreciated, for example to fully appreciate paintings you would have to stand in front of them, and for sculptures you have to walk around it to see each angle and every detail of it, but when it comes to architecture to fully appreciate and understand the work you would have to move through and around the art work.

We evaluate architecture not only by how it looks individually but also how it looks with its surroundings. There are many ways to look at architecture such as looking at visual, textural or the structure. The problem with concentrating on the visual is that the architecture becomes an object rather than a building that could be occupied. To fully appreciate the architecture you don’t just look at the structure, but also interact with it and move through it.

In the reading the author compares architecture to music saying that it is similar to music in the way it guides emotions. According to the reading (Robinson, “On Being Moved by Architecture”) there are two types of buildings. The first type is called ducks which includes the buildings that are shaped in the same form as its function for example the Long Island Duckling building which is shaped like a duck. The other type is called decorated shed and it includes a box-like structure that the function of which is announced simply by a sign.

Some buildings are iconic because of the way they look, but architecture is not limited by only the building, , you also have to take surroundings into account and how does architecture fit with them. As seen in the screening (Urbanized) the city was Brasilia was an example of taking surrounding into account as they made everything in a relatively close distance and the city was well organized.

Experiencing architecture requires the participation of the whole body and emotions walking through the hallways could take you on an emotional trip that you didn’t expect and even just looking at a building could give you confidence or leave you feeling small alienated or even powerless.

In conclusion I think that architecture is different than any other art form as you need to move through it and walk around in order to fully experience and appreciate it and get the emotional impact that it offers when you go inside it.
