IDS 400 Milestone One Topic Selection Worksheet

For this milestone, you will choose a local or global issue that pertains to problems in diversity. The chosen issue should also relate to one or more of the topics that is addressed in this course (sociology of diversity, biological diversity, cultural identity, diversity through socioeconomic status, etc.). In the presentation that you will create for the final project, you will explain the issue and how it pertains to culture. Include problems in diversity and any applicable topics, and provide a plan of action for addressing this issue. This plan includes recommendations for improvements as well as strategies and a plan for implementing the recommendations.

Use the prompts below to help you decide on the specific topic you will address in your final project.

1. Briefly describe your discipline of study or chosen profession, at this point in time, and the impact that diversity issues have on it.
Student Input Instructor Comments
Cultural identity is one of the aspects in diversity that is identifiable and critical in determining the models and aspects in the society. In a world where there are a lot of immigrants, it is important to assess the different models that are created and derived in the society. A cultural identity that is based on religion, culture and other aspects of societal nature has had immense effects on the society at large. Communities and countries are being split along different cultural identities and models that are essential in creating a working process in the larger country.

2. Describe the local or global issue you have selected to analyze for your final project. Which problem in diversity and course topic(s) does it address?
Student Input Instructor Comments
The effects of immigration on cultural identity and the problems that are raised as a result is pertinent in understanding the models and creating a specific model that is essential for individuals in the society. Religious diversity is one of the global issues that have seen massive fallout due to differences in opinions and cultural identities that rise as a result of these differences. It is therefore essential to create a working process and develop the best tools to assess the individual aspects and religious factions to understand the underlying issues and develop methods to mitigate the problem. The issue is meant to assess the larger issue that has led to terrorism in the society and the radicalization of individuals towards this cause.

3. Given that you will need to conduct serious research on the issue, is it sufficiently narrow to discuss in a presentation that is about 10 minutes in length? If not, what sub-issue within the larger one can you address?
Student Input Instructor Comments
Assessing the difference and fallout due to religion is a massive topic and cannot be analyzed and researched exhaustively. However, making an analysis of the difference between the Christians and Muslims in a small region in the US can be one of the methods that can be used. It is therefore critical to ensure that proper processes are developed to create a working process and develop individual tools that are essential within the larger society.

Final Comments or Recommendations From Instructor:

Submit a two- to three-page outline of the presentation you will give as part of your final project. Think of it as a s?r?pt with notes that help add context to the points you will be making. It does not need to include complete sentences or paragraphs, but it should contain enough detail to allow your instructor to offer you some feedback. Note that this outline, with revisions, can serve as your speaker notes for the final project submission.
