INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT

CASE STUDY CRITIQUE FORMAT GUIDELINES

When critiquing a case study, you must follow a structured format for analyzing the case. A several page summary of reciting the case study text does not constitute an acceptable case study critique. The structured format presented below helps the group stay focused on identifying the problems and presenting “in their own perspective” a recommended solution to the problem. You may or may not agree with how the problem was solved in the case study scenario. It is up to the group to discuss, clarify, and obtain consensus of how the problems should have been addressed. The overall critique should be around 3-5 pages in length, greatly dependent upon the magnitude and scope of the problems encountered in the case study.

The recommended/required format for future case studies in the INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT (IEM 4413) class will be as follows:

INTRODUCTION: SUMMARY OF THE FACTS

A simple introduction of the case study will suffice here. Discuss the history of the company being analyzed. Be sure to present the important points that relate to issues faced in solving the problem. It would be advantageous to discuss important events and people in the case study.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM(S)

In this section the group should present ALL of the problems facing the company. These problems may be initial circumstances, or they may be a result of the poorly implemented solution(s) to the problem.

CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM(S)

Further elaboration of the problem is necessary to help identify root causes of the problem. Once the causes are pinpointed and stratified, then alternative solution(s) can be crafted. The group’s personal observation and comments are important in this phase of the critique.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION(S)

Using what you have read in the case study and your class notes, determine the most appropriate solution(s) for the problems encountered. The group should spend most of their efforts in this phase of the critique process working together to come up with a viable set of solutions. The group may use the solution(s) presented in the case, however it is strongly recommended that modifications to the known solutions be considered.

IMPLEMENTATION

It will be equally important for the group to evaluate the results of implementing the known case study solutions into the organization. What repercussion effects were there, and did this cause any further complications to solve the problem. Expected results from the Group’s recommendations for new solution(s) should also be addressed in this section.

JUSTIFICATION

The last section of the critique is to justify why you made changes to existing known solutions of the problem. These may be budget driven, customer service focused, or employee empowerment related issues. Sufficient detail is necessary to substantiate your recommended solutions for the problem.
