Information Security

Description: Choose either a research paper (Option A) OR create a tool (Option B)

A) Write a research paper using one of the following options:

Find a recent example (within the last 2 years) of a security breach and write a comprehensive analysis of what happened and your recommendations for how it could have been prevented. Please use as much technical, organizational, and procedural information as you can. Try to put yourself in the role of an information security expert and design a document that you would be sharing with both the administration and technical staff of the organization.

Put yourself in the role of an Information Security instructor at a college. Write a comprehensive personal information security and system hardening document for your students. Envision your audience to be active internet users but unfamiliar with intermediate information security practices. Use what you’ve learned in this class to teach others how to protect themselves and others using the internet and why we need to do this.

Pick one of the following security topics and write a comprehensive study and analysis of this topic. Include at least some information not only on current applications of the technology, but also historical uses and as much information as you can gather about what direction this particular segment of information security is headed towards in the near future:

Physical security.

Encryption.

Biometrics.

User training.

B) Create a software tool (application) that would encrypt/decrypt text using a simple text & algorithm. The tool would also allow a user to hash a text. Listed below is important information regarding the tool/application:

The application can be either a GUI or a Windows

You can use any programming/scripting/markup language you are familiar with (Java, C++, C#, Python, PHP, HTML)

You can use the built-in cryptographic & hashing function that some of these languages have.
