interpersonal and social skills, including cultural competency

Paper details:

Instructions

The goal of this project is to move beyond the “classroom” and to (1) help you become aware of the diversity that exists around you, (2) reduce stereotypes and prejudices toward unfamiliar or misunderstood groups by fostering a sense of connectedness and empathy with strangers, (3) help develop interpersonal and social skills, including cultural competency, in an unstructured situation, and (4) utilizing theories in the real world.

The inspiration for this project comes from the Humans of New York photography blog created by Brandon Stanton. Originally, this was intended to be a photographic census of NYC, but it evolved to become more about people’s stories than about numeric results.

For this project, you will venture out into your city! Sometimes working with a partner, or bringing along a friend is helpful. You should find five people, couples or families whom you consider to be different from yourself or somehow outside the norm in society and who are willing to allow you to take their picture and ask them a few questions. There are no specific guidelines for the photographs, except that they must be original photographs taken by you for the purpose of this assignment, and the subject cannot be someone you already know.

You will also write a reflection paper in which you will comment on your thoughts about the assignment in general, your actual experience, and the specific connections made to theories we have read and/or discussed (minimum of 4 of the readings tied in and cited appropriately).

The Final Paper should include:

Introduction, including the locations, times, and dates
The people and experience, describe some of the responses to your questions. How do some of the responses fall in line with different theories we have discussed and read? Integrate *this is the largest section of the paper. Be sure to cite from some of the readings to complete your “story.” i.e. apply theories to explain people’s responses.
A reflection on your experience
A conclusion on what you learned
A few tips:

The paper should be well organized, use headers for sections (similar to APA style)
The large portion should be you analyzing people’s responses through the lens of the theories and concepts you read about throughout the semester. Anything from readings, lectures, or discussions can be cited. You may also use other sources, as long as it is not Wikipedia.
The typical paper is around 5-7 pages in length, double-spaced, not including reference page or title page. I am not a page counter, but this is about how much you would need to do a sufficient job.
Watch your spelling and grammar. For each instance you will lose a point.
Due Date

I would need to have the photographs for my PowerPoint presentation.
