Start early! An interview assignment is not a one-time thing, it needs to be planned.
For this assignment, you will interview an individual with a disability or a family member of a person with a disability. This can be a friend, neighbor, colleague, or a family member. Please ‘plan’ to interview earlier so you have time to complete the write-up and discussion.
Write a 3 to 4-page summary (line double-spacing, APA format. This 3-4 page summary does not include the Cover page and references, but you must add those in) that includes the name of the person you interviewed, the date of the interview, the exact questions you asked and a summary of the person’s responses. You do not need to write word-for-word what the person said as this could take a long time, and interrupt the ‘flow’ of the interview. You are free to voice-record the interview if you’d like (with the person’s permission). Taking notes during the interview will help you to remember the person’s responses when you sit down to write it up.
Organization of this assignment:
1. Brief introduction of the disability (this person has) – find out from a reliable source such as a peer-reviewed journal article. Helpful to have some statistics, or research highlights of this disability. This would be a good introductory paragraph.
2. Brief introduction of the person you are interviewing. You may change the name to protect the person’s identity.
3. Interview – what are the questions, and what did you find out? Open-ended questions are better than yes/no questions.
4. Reflection and concluding paragraph, include:
What’s your reflection after doing this interview? What did you learn from this interview?
Based on this interview, what’s the connection you can find from our Human Exceptionality book that you have read so far?
Is there also any connection to the research article or statistics you found in the 1st paragraph (#1)?
5. Reference section – don’t forget to list all sources used. Use APA style format. http://subjectguides.esc.edu/citing
