Job Hunting Package

Job Hunting Package

For this assignment, you will 1) design an entry-level resume; 2) write a persuasive cover letter (i.e., application letter) to go with the resume; and 3) write a

detailed self-analysis report on the rationale and strategies you used in creating those two documents. The target audience for your job hunting should be the one you

have chosen in the job search report.

The resume and cover letter therefore must have a professional look: clean, clear, visually appealing, well-organized, and error-free. Your grade will be lowered three

points for each mechanical, grammatical, or spelling error made in the two documents.

Before you begin, identify your purpose, your audience, the job or internship you’re looking for, and, most importantly, your own strengths or selling points relevant

to the job. You’ll need to highlight in the two documents your achievements and your skills, education, knowledge, work experience, personal qualities, or whatever you

believe would distinguish you as a candidate from other competitors.

For the cover (application) letter (120 pts.), you’ll need to give your reason(s) for applying for the job, provide evidence to support your claim as a viable job

candidate, and convince the audience that you have the personal qualities, motivation, and enthusiasm to perform well in the position. Be concise, limiting the letter

to one page (normally, a cover letter should not exceed five paragraphs). The tips we’ll be discussing (later in PPT slides) should help you brainstorm the letter, but

make sure you also use them as criteria for writing a good cover letter. Do not start every paragraph with the word “I.”

Write a self-analysis report (60 pts., in memo to the instructor), explaining the rationale and strategies behind the design/creation of your resume and cover letter

(minimum of 600 words). You’ll need to provide specific information about the target audience and/or the organization you’re applying to. More importantly, you’ll

explain strategies used in persuading your target audience to hire you: for instance, your bilingual background, the visual layout of your resume, or a significant

achievement mentioned in the letter. I want to know what particular appeals you have used in your resume and cover letterand how they make sense given the target

audience. Be specific, and use evidence from your resume and letter to support your claims in the analysis.
