Purpose: The overall purpose of this assignment is to compose a proposal essay that persuades your audience that a change needs to be made either locally or at the state level. You may propose changes to your job or school policies, state legislation, local/state projects, etc. As this is a persuasive essay, you will be employing the very appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) that you have analyzed in previous essays. The essay must show proficiency in APA formatting and citations.

Directions:
1.    Select a change that you would like to propose within Ohio (locally or state-wide). Support your ideas with your own logic and a minimum of four research sources as follows: two online sources, one print text (book, magazine, or newspaper), and one source of your choice (you might consider using an interview or some other type of primary research).
2.    Compose a clear introduction, body, and conclusion for the essay. In your essay, be sure to address the following questions: a) What is the current problem that needs to be changed? b) Why does the change need to happen? c) What is the best solution to this problem? d) What exactly would have to happen in order for the change to take place? e) What obstacles could prevent the change from happening, and how could those challenges be overcome?
3.    Use instructor and peer feedback of your rough draft to engage in deep revision. Be sure to proofread and edit your paper carefully before submitting the final draft.

Expectations:
A successful proposal argument will…
•    include cohesive, properly formatted paragraphs (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion)
•    offer a clear thesis statement regarding the proposal you are making
•    include answers to all questions listed above
•    employ transitions that will help the reader follow your ideas
•    use at least four quotations from your sources and cite them properly in APA style (this includes BOTH parenthetical citations and a References page). Note: this means four total quotations, not four quotations from each source.
•    include an accurate abstract articulating the main idea of your paper
•    use the first person point of view to describe your experience and not use the second person point of view
•    correctly utilize APA format including a title page, abstract, headers, and references

These are the criteria I will be looking at when I grade your papers

This proposal argument paper needs to be about social security.

PROBLEM
What is the current problem? The current problem is the lack of money in social security.

Why is it a problem? This is a problem because soon it will run out and people who will need it when they retire will not have it.

Who is affected by this problem? People who are not of retirement age are affected by this because when they come due to retire there will not be enough money there to supplement their retirement if they even have a retirement to use

SOLUTION
What exactly is the solution you’re proposing?
The solution I am proposing is that we get people jobs who are not working that can work so they can help pay into it so they don’t get it for free when they can get it. Put more money into the Social Security fund and take from some other fund that may have too much going into it. Or even educate more people on setting up better retirement and save more.

Who needs to act to implement this solution? The government needs to reinforce this policy. People need to do better at saving for the future. People need to work instead of being lazy and receiving handouts at the expense of others.

What objections could be raised against this solution? Some objections could be how could they enforce this. Where could they get the money from other funds to help this cause. How could they get people to work.

RESULT
If this solution were implemented, what would be the end result?
There would be more money for the people that worked hard for a living and are able to have a comfortable retirement when they get older. More people wouldn’t have to stay working past retirement age.
