For this essay, you will write in response to one of the prompts (Suggestions for Writing) at the end of any of the sections of “Letters to My Younger Self:An
Anthology of Writings by Incarcerated Men at S.C.I. Grateford” by Thompson, Jayne; DeFreitas, Emily . (The last prompt is on page 139). Please do NOT choose any of the
prompts at the end of the chapter/section titled, “Conversations with a Poet.”

Note, for example, on p. 39 you have the possibility to write a letter like those in the book. When you turn in this assignment, write the prompt question at the top
of the page as part of your title. Create your own title for your essay under the prompt questions.

Set up your name, title, and so on according to MLA guidelines. See the Purdue OWL or MindTap for examples.

Tips: (These are for all essays)

Seldom use you as a point of view in academic papers. For this essay, it is logical that you use the first-person point of view, I.

Give your essay a catchy title that makes readers want to read. Do not underline or italicize your own title.

Consider using dialoguemost writers make this up somewhat, since we usually cannot remember exactly what was said in the past.

Use the five senses to make readers feel as if they are there.

Watch verb tense: make sure you use tense consistently and logically.

Create effective topic sentences for your paragraphs, but be sure they are not too broad or vague.

Proofread to avoid run-ons and comma splices and other errors in grammar and punctuation.
