I. The Assignment This course is intended to familiarize you with the foundations of Economics. The ultimate goal is for you to be able to understand and interpret what is going on in the contemporary world of Economics, both in the United Stated and around the world. The course paper is your opportunity to get some practice at applying what you have learned. The paper will be due April 30, 2018 (Monday).
II. No late papers will be accepted.
III. You have plenty of time to write this paper during the semester, so start early. The paper should be 10 pages, including references, size 12 script, double spaced. It should be an economic analysis of a country of your choice.
IV. Please structure your paper as follows: 1. Choose a country to analyze.
a. Briefly explain why this particular country is interesting to you.
b. 2. Focus on the main economic indicators of the country you have chosen, and explore them over time.
c. Analyze any major trends you observe in these (and all other) indicators over at least a few decades (i.e. you can select 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 as main data points, for example).
d. Those country indicators include, but are not limited to:
i. – GDP and GDP/capita (economic growth)
ii. – CPI and inflation
iii. – Unemployment
iv. – Finance and Investment
v. Major industry sectors and their structure (are they competitive, monopolistic, or oligopolistic)
vi. – Any major government interventions
vii. – Efficiency and fairness in the local markets, and their global links
viii. – How globalized is the overall economy of the country.
3. Conclude by discussing your opinion of the economic development and future of this country, based on what you have learned during your research.
4. Provide a list of your references at the end of the paper, in an APA format. You should use at least 5 references. A proper reference consists of: author(s), title of the article/book, year of publication, and venue of publication. A web-site alone is not a reference!
5. Include tables and graphs to support your analysis in an Appendix to the paper (that is not included in the page count).
