This Tuesday in class, we will be discussing unintentional communication. For discussion board 1, I would like you to list at least two ways in which we may communicate messages unintentionally. Please list your two examples and tell why/how it unintentionally communicates a message and the implications of the unintentional communication. Also, if the unintentional communication could be considered negative, list a reason of how this could be avoided. Please post your answer to this question, as well as a response to at least 2 classmates by Sunday at midnight.
Classmate 1:
I agree that it is possible for someone to communicate with another by use of hand gestures, but I think that there is another way that the communication can be interpreted. It is also possible for someone glancing over at the conversation between two people and misinterpret the hand gestures as meaning one thing while it really means another. A person using aggressive hand gestures while talking to a friend about a person that annoys them at work may seem to a bystander as being angry at the person that they are speaking to.
Classmate 2:
Everyday people unintentionally communicate messages to each other. Our body language says a lot about what we are thinking with out us even having to say anything it. When I see a friend I run up to them and hug them and smile with my eyebrows up. If I’m interested in a conversation, I turn my body towards that person and use my hands to talk. Another way people communicate unintentionally is when they cross their arms or put their hand on their hip. If I’m bored or don’t really want to be talking to that person I’ll put my hand on my hip and turn my body away. By doing this I think it shows the person I’m not interested in talking to them which is considered negative. I could avoid this by being more aware of how I’m acting and try to not be so closed off.
