M7A1 Project: Special Occasion Speech
The goal is for you to experience how to present a speech for a special occasion. In your life, you will have opportunities to make speeches at special events or for
special occasions. This assignment will give you the chance to practice doing this.
Description: You will choose a special event and present a speech for this event. Once you determine what your specific goal for this speech is, you can move along to
collect the information necessary for your audience. Select a topic that will fit this event and your audience. Always keep in mind that not everyone has the same idea
as to what to talk about at a special occasion. So, consider the topic and who is going to be attending. Remember to answer the question, “why should the audience
listen to me?”
Focus:
Select a topic that fits the event and your audience.
Research your subject carefully. If you are an expert, you need to state why explicitly in the introduction.
Build credibility.
Organize the information such that it is easy for the audience to understand and remember. Carefully include all the speech components.
Keep your audience’s attention through your content, language, and presentational skills.
Remember to use the research skills you learned about in this course.

Do not write out your speech. Let’s practice extemporaneously speaking.

Practice your speech with a buddy. It helps to run through your speech several times with others before videotaping your presentation. A well-rehearsed speech can
contribute to confidence building and an overall feeling of preparedness.
Materials to submit:
You should submit a full sentence preparation outline for your speech.
Three to five resources are required. APA citation conventions are to be used for the bibliography, paper and speech citations.
Your Special Occasion Speech will contain the following:
You are to videotape yourself in front of an audience of no less than 5 people.
To show me that you have 5 people in the audience, you are to videotape the audience before beginning your speech.
You are to videotape your speech in one shot; you are not allowed to edit or stop and start the videotape. If you do this, you will not receive credit for this
assignment
The speech should be 8 to 10 minutes in length.
You are to write a speech outline, as shown in this PDF . Please deliver your speech from this outline, written on note cards. This is an extemporaneous speech;
therefore, please review the guidelines for speaking extemporaneously before you begin rehearsing your speech.
You may or may not use visual aids. The aids are not required for this speech. It is important to choose what visual aids (if any at all) will work best for this
particular audience.
