Math Questions

Below is the math problem that I completed. I need t answer two questions pretaining to my answer. The math problem is listed below and below it are the two questions.

For this discussion I am assigned number 38, so we have adult dose 100mg Tamiflu; 5 year old child for part (a) and 1200mg adult, 240mg child for part (b). Now
cowling’s rule is a formula to convert the adult dose into child dose using the age of the child.

The formula is d=D(a+1)/24 where d=child’s dose, D=adult dose and a=age of child.

As we can see that we have three variables in this literal equation.

Now for the first part we have,

a=5 years

D=100 mg and we need to calculate the child’s dose, we can substitute the values in the above literal equation and we get,

d=100(5+1)/24

on solving we get,

d=100*6/24

d=100/4

d=25mg

so the dose for a 5 year old child is 25mg
Now in the part (b) we are given the adult dose and the child dose and we need to find the age of the child. So again substitute the values in the literal equation
above:

240=1200(a+1)/24

On solving we get

240=50(a+1)

240/50=(a+1)

24/5=(a+1)

4.8=a+1

3.8=a

the dose of 240 mg is intended for a 4 year old child.

Question 1

We learn that terms are numbers and/or variables that are stuck together with multiplication and division. For example, 2 is a single term. So is 9xy/2, because it’s
all stuck together (it’s a fraction). Single terms are separated from each other by addition or subtraction. For example: abc + 7d – 4d + a/2 has four terms.

How many terms are there in the expression D(a+1)?

Question 2

How does a literal equation differ from a conditional equation?
