This week’s forum is asking if MNC are good or bad citizens. I have always believe corporations were bad I held on to this notion for a long time but as I get older I see things differently than I thought before. I really think that corporations are made of people and people can make bad decisions. This does not mean that their necessarily a bad citizens. Sometimes its just how the cookie crumbles. So this is why I chosen the Hanes corporation because I truly believe the entity is trying to be a good global citizen. Hanes has programs such as Green for Good to display the social responsibility of the company. Hanes has three global issue that the company addresses. Environmental, volunteerism, and community support this is a lot for a clothing manufacturer. Hanes does take advantage of cheap labor forces and cheap energy price throughout the global market. I never thought of energy prices having an affect on MNC’s but it just makes since some countries the cost to keep the lights on would be cheaper that others. Anyways I have read this book the travels of a t-shirt is a global economy. The book had try to take a very optimistic view of globalization which really made it interesting. One fact was the subsidiaries between governments and farms to control prices. This allows the U.S. to be one of the biggest cotton growers in the U.S. Allowing the U.S. to dominate this market. Hanes by taking advantage of this has the upper hand to pay what they want for cotton. Anyways I am starting to ramble I guess what I am trying to say is that yes this would be fair only is money was the same every where. It really doesn’t seem right for a country to stroll into another country to milk the citizens of time and their backs. If a company had to pay a fair price across the boards for labor then that would be some what fair. Any ways I think that the Hanes corporation is a fair and good citizen.

For this forum I have chosen to talk about the private security contractor DynaCorp. The private security sector is basically unregulated multi-billions dollars global business. DynaCorp is a major global player in this industry. They have been involved in training Iraqi Police, guarding Afghani statesmen and protecting African Oil fields. These hired mercenaries have proven that they can bolster the security of governments of have down so repeatedly at the expense of people civil rights.
DynCorp fumigated the cocoa fields on the border between Columbia and Ecuador, which leads to a law suite from the Ecuadorian peasants and a whistle blower in 2001, reported rape and sex-trade violations in Bosnia. This whistleblower was fired and no one was prosecuted.
In Iraq DynaCorp was cited several times for wasting millions of dollars in US funds. The accusations were serious enough to allow a fraud inquiry. Currently the Department of Justice is suing DynaCorp for fraud related to money used in Iraq.
Recently DynaCorp has partnered with World Wide Humanitarian Services and Casals and Associates to provide aide to post conflict areas and government reforms. They have also made several acquisitions that will allow them to shift toward diplomacy and developmental work.
Although the question of whether or not this MNC is good or bad seems like an easy answer, after thinking about it for a while I am not sure were I stand. They for certain have made terrible human right violations but this in my opinion is a direct result of lack of oversight in the industry. DynaCorp and companies like it supply security guards and trainers that are private contractors but in the end they perform military duties. Currently there are no internationally excepted rules or legal framework applied to these contractors. Until such rules are in place I think that DynaCorp has to be grouped with the bad guys. Actual military operations should not be left in the hands of companies that are looking to make a profit. It leads to the mishandling of money and lapses in judgment that lead to civil right violations.
