In reaction to the assigned materials, explain what is meant by medical “professions.” Give specific examples of what these professions are and the different roles they play within the larger health care system. Also, what does Starr mean when he discusses “professional authority?” How to ideas of class, status, and power come into play? Also, what role did the AMA play in the early development of the profession? Do you think the barriers to entry (e.g. educational requirements, licensing requirements, etc.) were fair from racial, class, or gender perspectives? Why or why not?
