For this assignment, visit your local library and ask the children’s librarian to help you locate three multicultural children’s books written by the same author (see below). Read through the books to get an idea of their quality (use the readings for this week to help you when considering the quality of the books). Do a brief Internet search for the author of the books and read about his/her background. Then, use the books to address the following questions:
What makes each of these books multicultural? To what genre does each book belong?
What culture(s) and/or racial/ethnic group(s) do(es) these books represent? How do you know?
Is there any kind of cultural information included in either book via additional text features outside of the main story (i.e., an author’s note, a blurb on the book jacket, etc.)?
Would you say that these books are both accurate and authentic representations of the culture that they depict? Why or why not?
Is the author’s cultural background similar to or the same as the culture as at least one of the books? If so, how do you think this may have influenced the author when writing these books? If not, why do you think the author chose to write about a culture that is not his/her own, and do you think that he/she is qualified to write abut this culture?
What are your overall impressions of each of these books? Would you use them in an elementary classroom? Why or why not?
You may respond to these questions in any format you wish–through a written summary, a PowerPoint or Prezi, a video, or any other format that will allow you to answer the questions fully. Please include APA citations for the books that you choose
