4 Examples this time

As we learned, Jazz is not a single “style”, but a culmination of several sounds and cultures. We continue to push the boundaries of jazz and incorporate more influences from around the world in the present era.

Listen to all 4 pieces once all the way through, then answer the following questions. Do give your full effort and Do listen to the examples multiple times as you write your response! I will do the first question for you, please be just as thorough:

—————————————————————————————

  • Q1: How does the Timbre differ in each example, and what kind of sounds/styles does it imply? (example answer)

Each example uses a Drumset, Bass, some wind instruments. “Grandma B.B.” has a guitar and a fuller ensemble which seems to evoke the sound of the Big Band. “Across the Room” and “Mahmoud’s Mood” uses a dark sounding electric keyboard which seems to make the music more Chill. “Mahmoud’s Mood” also has Congas and adds a little Latin flavor. “Across the Room” sometimes uses Slap Bass which makes it sound Funky.

  • Q2: What do you think are each example’s major influences?
(ex. “Grandma B.B.” seems to be the most Traditionalist with forms reminiscent of New Orleans Jazz)
  • Q3: What do you think are the defining characteristic of each piece is? (Aside from Timbre)
(ex. the very disjunct melody and the very dissonant but beautiful harmony makes “Twenty-Seven” cool)
  • Q4: What single description can you give of the rhythm and melody of all 4 pieces?
  • Q5: Whose Improvisation/Solo (name the instrument who plays it) was your favorite and why?
