My New Home

The road of the life is a point of view of some people sees their lives. How they try to keep going and evading obstacles and blocks of which road are some examples of this idea until the finish line is when the person dies and accomplish all his/her objectives and goals. I imagine my road of the life with many curves and obstacles to avoid and try to convince myself to go to the correct line. Many people and also including me got stack in some part of our lives; we feel we have stones blocking our way. And there is a point where we have to make the toughest decisions. For me, this experienced came quickly after I finished high school. My life route was unclear, and I was undecided what I was going to do after finishing high school. Consequently, my parents and I have a ¬pre-planned-decision for me moving to the United States, living in my uncle’s house, and trying to get a college degree. I feel leaving everything: my home, way-of-life, friends, and my family, and restarting my life again. How did this unique experience change my life totally?

Since I was a little baby, I have had great experiences and memories about my childhood. I always like to take care and play with my little brothers, spending my memorable summer vacation with my family, or eating the exquisite food which my grandmother cooked. Moreover, I have a lot of my craziest youngest-adolescence experiences gathering with my friends of high school, such as going to parties or drinking. Yet time usually comes very fast for most of the people and especially for me; I had to decide what I was going to do after I got eighteen years old. Many people said I am smart, and many of them sometimes got surprised because I am a left-handed person, which many articles and magazines established that many left-handed people uses the two hemispheres of the brain: left and right at the both time, so they, consequently, are very intelligent. Therefore, since I was a child, I ought to decide to earn a degree and loved computers which was my initial to study a technological career. My favorite’s subjects, furthermore, at school were mathematics and sciences like chemistry or physics. However, one of the biggest problems of studying in my country, which is a Latin America third-country, was that the technological professional areas like computer science were not a demanding job, so I went for business administration. Because of the poor economy of the country, it needs more professionals in the business area for opening more industries and decreases the unemployment rate. This was not the only option for me while I am a citizen of the United States.

I was born in the United States, so I started to think the possibilities of studying there. I have family and so there was a house to stay. I suggested specially my father of the possibilities of going to the United States, and my dad said, “it is your own decision, and you decide not us; I will help you in your necessities if you study there.” My head started to think, and I realized it was the hardest decision to make due to the fact I would leave everything: my family, my home, my friends, and also the delicious food. In the other hand, staying with my family it would bring possibilities of an unclear future for me because of the economic issues of the country. Also I could not accomplish my goal of being a computer scientist. As a result, I decided for my economic status and go to the United States of America and started a new life.

It was Sunday 28, February of 2009; I was leaving from the airport saying good-bye to my family and friends looking depressed. I was accompanied with my father who wants to make sure to set some accommodations in my uncle’s house and leave me in good hands. In addition, the flight was too long like elven hours which first stopped at Miami, Florida; and then continued going to Los Angeles, California. Luckily, we only flight six hours spending the night at Miami, and then at the morning, we continued to California. My father and I arrived like three o’clock being waited by my uncle who picked us up. I got impressed on how big is the country and different was since I had not visited for years. My dad was only coming for one week, so I feel I was going for touristic reasons because I was with him. From a touristic view, it is always different, such as most people go to relax enjoying their vacation. For instance, I wanted to go to eat all the varieties of fast food and restaurants which are offered and go shopping to the enormous malls. But the week went extremely fast, and I was not preparing for living alone.

My parent left the next week, and I feel I was not ready to start my new life. My suggestions from my cousins was first to domain the language, English, and I should repeat the last year of high school, yet the principals from the school said I was eighteen, and I had to go to the evening adult class for English. I remember that horrible classes; they taught us like a kinder-garden kids repeating words and learning kids vocabulary. It was so frustrating because I did not know how to start and did not receive any help and advice from my uncle; I was feeling alone missing my family and friends and wanted to return back giving away. In the other hand, giving away was divesting for me because I would feel like a loser and humiliated person if returned to my country, so I decided to continue fighting. Furthermore, I had to learn a new type of culture and also interacting with people. One weekend in my uncle’s, we received a visited from some relatives from Arizona, my dad’s cousin. I established a good relationship with him, and told about why I was here, and I wanted my accomplished goals. He talked about the community colleges – I did not know in that time because in my country there are only universities – and how I could be transfer. With some research in the internet, I chose the closest college near my house, and apply it.

Starting college at fall, I feel more secure and confident with myself with the less idea of no returning to my country. I registered to my classes which was very difficult because most of the classes were full. Thus I went to talk to a consular who advice what classes I should talk and ESL was one the best recommend classes, for I expanded my knowledge in English using grammar and writing. Moreover, ESL was an interesting class because I meet many people of different countries like Asia, Middle East, or Latin America. I learned too much about different and the American culture. At this class, I met a wonderful friend who taught and suggested me a lot of the rules or laws about this country like a registration of the car or filling taxes. He also taught me to drive and helped me to buy my first car. In addition, I got accustomed living in the United States and accommodating to this new type of culture. I gained a lot of experience talking with people in college learning how the educational system works and getting transferred to a university. Finally, I changed of personally gaining a lot of experiences to tell and being a more mature person.

Living in another country like the United States alone without the family and friends made me a strong person inside. Before experiencing this new changed, I was an independent, irresponsible, and immature child who all surrounded was gotten very easily with the help of my parents. But now I realized life is not easy and am able to make my dreams come true which is very tough but not impossible. I am now a very self-value, independent, responsible person who learned in the toughest method experiencing a new type of culture and manners. This unique capability is going to be grabbed in my memories for the rest of my life because I know how my personality changed.
