Active Learning Vignette

1) Which of these learning environments is most appealing to you?
2) Why?
3) Have you ever experienced the 2nd or 3rd environment? How did it work for you?

For me, I am a student that loves to be pushed, and with that comes a motivation to learn. This motivation not only stems from my own self-motivation, but also in how a teacher motivates me to learn through their passion with the course material, ability to lecture, responsibility for student learning outcomes, and so on. Additionally, I am also the type of student that enjoys being able to actively learn on my own. I find that if a professor does not satisfy these features, I am less motivated and inclined to learn the material of the class, which leads to a decrease in both my satisfaction and engagement with the course’s material. Thus, based on the Vignette learning environments, the teacher C learning environment is the most appealing to me, as I am self-motivated, love-to-be-in-control-of-my-learning kind of student, but also derive a great deal of motivation from teacher involvement and responsibility for student learning.

I have experienced a teacher C learning environment and have found that it makes my job as a student not only easier but also more rewarding. My first experience with a teacher C learning environment was during my first semester at Uvic in an intro sociology class. The teacher assumed a great deal of responsibility for what the students were learning as class activities were carried out. This was done by providing detailed explanations of what was expected of students for each task, while also lending support and guidance for further clarification when it was necessary. But, the professor also turned the learning process over to the students by giving each the opportunity to complete an essay on any recent sociological topic, provided the researched material did not include the course textbook; I found that I was more motivated to learn the course material because of this teaching environment. I also found that I looked forward to each class more so than any other during that semester due to the teacher motivating me to become more involved with the class material while also giving me the opportunity to actively learn on my own rather than just passively listening to him lecture about sociology.
