How English 102 will help me in my major
My major subject is marketing. As a marketing student I will have to do various tasks. In the class I will be required to write business analysis papers, make marketing strategy for a business or conduct market research. These are essential requirements that normally all marketing students have to fulfill. Communication is a large part of the life of marketers. English knowledge can open many jobs in different careers including marketing. According to Brooks, “The list of careers which can incorporate a foreign language background is endless, but fields which are more likely to need your skills include information technology, hospitality (including travel and tourism), marketing, healthcare, and government agencies” (Brooks). Marketing students as well as marketing professionals have to write to communicate as well as to speak to communicate with people. English 102 is a course that can help me in learning to communicate professionally. This class is a source of knowledge for effective communication. I am taking this class with the expectation to learn to communicate well. It will allow me to have the skills for writing like a professional person and also responding to others’ queries and questions efficiently in English language.
Marketers meet a lot of new people all the time. New people have different understanding. Some of them might have a very different language level as well. It is important for a marketing professional to have good command on English language so that he could communicate with different people he meets in his daily life. He should be able to meet the language competency level with the people from different backgrounds to make communication better and sell better. English 102 will make this foreign language more familiar for me.
English 102 is also important for me because it brings in practice in reading and writing. Reading and writing skills are important in marketing profession for a number of reasons. The primary reason is that English has become a major language in which every professional communicates for work. According to Dorie Clark, “it seems that English may be the most essential language for global business success at the moment” (Clark). Since global business communication takes place in English language it is important for marketing professionals to learn English very well. Their English language proficiency will enable them to succeed in their profession. Since English 102 in a means of learning English language and gaining proficiency in it, as a marketing profession student, it will help me gain more proficiency in English. It is a good course for my career.
Learning English is a part of literacy which is required for professional efficiency. Ability to read, write and speak English is very important. It is greatly needed in present times. According to Exforsys, “It has been estimated that out of the roughly 6 billion people that are alive today about 350 million speak English” (Exforsys). When it is so widely spoken its importance increases even more because a large number of people globally expect a person to know it. Therefore learning English is an important part of literacy. This literacy involves ability of communicate in English language by listening, reading, writing and speaking. A marketer needs to listen to others and his targets can be global as well. For global communication the marketer will need to have good command on English. English 102 will offer opportunities to learn better and use the learned skills in a professional scenario.
English 102 aims at covering maximum competency. As a major in marketing I will need to learn to not only just speak and listen to understand in English but also to write professionally. English 102 will have a lot of practice tasks. These tasks will be designed to provide knowledge and experience of creating professionally written documents. These documents can be business proposals, marketing strategies, business plans, reports and summaries. To write, format and create professionally accurate documents, I will need skills. I am sure English 102 will offer skill development through its exercises and writing tasks. These skills will be useful in allowing me to write reports, business plans, letters and other documents. Writing practice through work in English 102 can make me a better writer.
While report writing and business plan writing is formal, structured writing, there are other writing skills included in the work plans of a marketer that require English writing proficiency. These skills are based on official communication. Official communication can be challenging for a person who has not studied English formally in a class. However, English 102 will enable a marketer to understand how to compose semi-formal emails for colleagues and formal emails for potential or existing customers. Once, I have completed the class I will be able to write good letters and memos. The class will train me for formal and informal writing. I will make great emails for my business communication. I will learn these skills through English 102 therefore, this course is very beneficial for me as a marketing student.
