The total-body angular momentum of a diver changes from zero to some significant value (positive or negative depending on the type of dive) during the takeoff phase. Miller and Munro (1985) reported that Greg Louganis had an angular momentum at takeoff of -65 kg·m2/s in the forward 3.5-somersault dive performed in the closed pike position, an angular momentum of 50 kg·m2/s in the reverse 2.5-somersault dive in the open pike position, and an angular momentum of -19 kg·m2/s in a straight forward dive (layout).
