Read the introduction along with chapter 1 of the book Consciousness and the Brain by Stanislas Dehaene (2014). Then answer the following questions:

  1. Dehaene gets us started on an investigation into the study of consciousness. Similar to most scientific investigations, we need to define what exactly is meant by the terms we are using. What does Dehaene mean by “consciousness” and how might it differ from terms like “attention” or “wakefulness”?

  1. Dehaene explains why it has been difficult to study consciousness in the past. One obstacle has been the lack of good methods to study it from a scientific perspective. In chapter one, he describes several new methods that can be used to study consciousness by investigating situations where we can contrast situations where we “see” something (we are conscious of it) from situations where we it disappears (we are unconscious of it). Thoroughly understand one of these methods he presented by describing it using your own words.

  1. Why do you think that Dehaene spent so much time discussing the role that “subjectivity” plays as a means to investigate consciousness?
