Case Study
Eleanor, a 72-year-old woman living in her own home, has a history of depression. Her depression has stabilized with antidepressants, but she has been having trouble sleeping. While visiting, her daughter suggested Eleanor try an over-the-counter sleep aid medication. Eleanor also has been suffering with a cold and has been using a decongestant.
Three days later, Eleanor’s neighbour found her disheveled, wandering in the street, and unable to find her house. When the neighbour approached Eleanor, she began to scream, attempted to hit the neighbour, and yelled, “You’re stealing all my things.” The neighbour called Eleanor’s daughter who came immediately and found her mother did not recognize her. Once she got her mother calmed down and settled in the house, the daughter discovered that 10 of the new sleeping aids had been used. She immediately took her mother to hospital where Eleanor is also found to be dehydrate.
