Read the following: This is an individual assignment. You will develop an organizational assessment based on your internship or place of employment. If neither of these options is available to you, please consult with your instructor to determine an alternate organization that you are (or have recently been) connected with in your community. To answer the questions you may use agency materials such as brochures, flyers, annual reports, websites, and other public material. In addition, some questions may require interviewing staff or using other internal sources. If that is the case, please obtain permission from your supervisor or other necessary administrator.

Write a paper of no more than 6 pages and address all of the points in the outline below. Include a title page, references, and other appendices if necessary (these will not count against your page limit). Use the main headers below to organize your paper. Do not write out the questions.

  • Assess the Organization’s Programs and Services
    1. Introduce the organization. What type of organization is it? What programs and services are offered?
    2. What populations are served by the agency/organization?
    3. What are the service goals and objectives? Are they evidence-informed (i.e. based on what has been proven to work to address the primary issue of concern)? If so, describe/discuss. If not, discuss what possible issues this may present.
    4. Are the services consistent with the goals and objectives of the program?
    5. Are workload expectations reasonable given expectations for achievement with each client and within each service and program?
  • Assess Adequacy of Technical Resources and Facilities
    1. Do employees feel they have enough space and space of an appropriate type?
    2. Have problems been identified with current facilities and equipment? If so, is there a plan to address the problems and to fund solutions?
    3. Are there conditions related to facilities or equipment that appear to act as barriers to productivity?
    4. Are the facilities accessible to clients?
  • Identify and Assess Relationships with Regulatory Bodies, Professional Organizations, and the General Public
    1. What federal, state, local, or other regulatory bodies oversee programs by this organization?
    2. What professional associations, licensing and certification boards, and accrediting bodies influence agency operations?
    3. What are the perceptions of the “general public” in terms of the relevance, value, and quality of agency services?
  • Identify and Assess Relationships with Clients and Referral Sources
    1. Does agency have enough resources to meet the demand for services?
    2.  Are the agency’s services, facilities and methods of communication culturally relevant and appropriate for the clients it serves?
    3. What type of clients does the organization not serve (are there disproportionate numbers of poor, elderly, persons of color, women, persons with disabilities, gays/lesbians, or other groups that are underserved)?
    4. Describe the relationships the agency has with partner agencies and referral sources.
  • Issues/Recommendations
    1. What are the main issues affecting the agency?
    2. What recommendations would you make to address the issues affecting the agency?
    3. What strategies would you use to share the findings with the agency community to promote change?
