Organizational Behavior and group work

One area of controversy is how well you can accurately assess the personalities of employees or potential employees. One popular way is through various questionnaires.

For your first post, give the following information:

How would you rate yourself on each of the Big Five personality traits based on only the description of the trait? Would your friends agree with your self-ratings?
After your own self-ratings, you can use the link provided in your textbook, http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/to take a personality test. Alternatively, you can do a word search in Google or other search engines on “big five personality test” and find an online personality test that will tell you how you rate on the Big Five dimensions.
Take the test and compare your results with your initial self-ratings.
How do you feel about the personality test you took? Was it accurate, or not very helpful?
Also, provide the link to the test from the text or the one you found in case any of your classmates want to use it.

For your second and third posts, compare your results with those of your classmates, and try to find a classmate with opposite traits from yours as well as one with very similar traits.

Peer 1:

Hi, Class

The Big Five is a research-driven approach in psychology which derives from the notion that the most common personality traits can be captured by five core dimensions: Openness to Experience. Conscientiousness. Extroversion. Agreeableness.

The first three example of the Big Five are the one that I classify myself with a highest percentage of my personality.

1- Extraversion – Extraverts get their energy from interacting with others, while introverts get their energy from within themselves. Extraversion includes the traits of energetic, talkative, and assertive. I’m a person that likes to transmit the positive energy to everyone around me. I like to communicate and express myself.

2-Neuroticism-is also sometimes called Emotional Stability. This dimension relates to one’s emotional stability and degree of negative emotions. People that score high on neuroticism often experience emotional instability and negative emotions. Traits include being moody and tense. I’m emotional stable, I do not like to get mad for small reasons.

3-Agreeableness- These individuals are friendly, cooperative, and compassionate. People with low agreeableness may be more distant. Traits include being kind, affectionate, and sympathetic. I like to meet people, make friends every where that I go. I’m the one who brings people together.

4-Conscientiousness- People that have a high degree of conscientiousness are reliable and prompt. Traits include being organized, methodic, and thorough. I like to have the control of decision making in everything that involve me. I’m organize, I set up goals and I’m realistic with the deadline to reach the goals.

5- Openness- People who like to learn new things and enjoy new experiences usually score high in openness. Openness includes traits like being insightful and imaginative and having a wide variety of interests. This one is not the best trait for me still, I put the effort to experience some new things. I’m open-minded when we talk about adventures.

I belief that my friends and family members that know me well, will agree with my own rating. Base on the test of test of Big Five personality traits my highest number is 95 of Extraversion, 72 Conscientiousness and 58 Agreeableness. This result is pretty accurate to my own evaluation and after doing the test I confirm that I’m an Extraversion.

Peer 2:

First let me start by saying that I find these tests to be very interesting and extremely useful in the work/team environment. It does a lot good to truly know who you’re working with and how to also work with them. You can work side-by-side with someone for a long time and never know their inner struggles.

Based off my results I’d say they’re pretty spot on. I don’t know that these will always be so accurate but for the most part if answered honestly it would work and show us what others probably already know in some cases or help us in cases where we are surprised.

The model used in this test was the Ocean model because of the acronym from the names of the five dimensions. Here are my results.

-Open Mindedness: High scorers tend to be original, creative, curious, complex; Low scorers tend to be conventional, down to earth, narrow interests, uncreative.

I scored in the 81st percentile: You enjoy having novel experiences and seeing things in new ways.

-Conscientiousness: High scorers tend to be reliable, well organized, self-disciplined, careful; Low scorers tend to be disorganized, undependable, and negligent.

I scored in the 97th percentile: You are very well organized and can be relied upon.

-Extroversion: High scorers tend to be sociable, friendly, fun loving, talkative; Low scorers tend to be introverted, reserved, inhibited, and quiet.

I scored in the 99th percentile. You are extremely outgoing, social, and energetic.

-Agreeableness: High scorers tend to be good-natured, sympathetic, forgiving, courteous; Low scorers tend to be critical, rude, harsh, and callous.

I scored in the 58th percentile: You are neither extremely forgiving nor irritable.

-Negative Emotionally: High scorers tend to be nervous, high-strung, insecure, worrying; Low scorers tend to be calm, relaxed, secure, hardy.

I scored in the 25th percentile: You are generally relaxed.
