Organizational Behavior

Text is Greenberg, Jerald, Behavior in Organizations, 10th ed. Prentice Hall, 2011. ISBN13:
9780136090199.
For this assignment, you will write a paper applying the course materials to one of three different movies. The movie choices are The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957: Alec Guinness, Sessue Hayakawa, William Holden), Lawrence of Arabia (original version, 1962: Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif), or Hunt for Red October (1990: Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, James Earl Jones, Sam Neill). All of these movies have great Organizational Behavior issues in them, and the issues are often dealt with in unusual ways. I have tried to pick movies that you are somewhat less likely to have seen. For that
reason, most of these are older, but are in color (Yay!). Moreover, they each won at least one Academy Award.
Your task is to write a paper using the movie you choose and the Organizational Behavior elements you find in it. The paper needs to be approximately 3,500 words, double spaced, 12point
Times New Roman font, one inch margins all around, and bottom right page numbers. You must reference all your research (this should be from sources you quote and from sources you refer to, or mention) both in your text (e.g., Johnson, 2013), and on a Reference page. Please proofread
your paper before submitting it. The paper must be free of spelling and grammar mistakes. It must be a logically written, coherent paper. You will turn the Final Paper in through SafeAssign.
The objective of watching a movie and writing this paper, integrating your study this term with the movie, is to learn about organizations as represented in the movie, and comparing and contrasting these with the following important areas of
Organizational Behavior:
1) Motivation: How are people motivated at work (and what demotivates
them)?
2) Group Dynamics: Successful and unsuccessful groups and teams, and how the teams’ effectiveness (or lack thereof)
impacts organizational performance and productivity.
3) Organizational Structure and Culture:
a) Appropriateness of structure to the environment, objectives, and strategy (how people are arranged into teams/departments, etc.). Also, consider the “Personality” of each organization, which includes its core values and beliefs.
b) Rules for behavior.
c) Language used (I’m not talking about profanity, as such (though profanity may be included), but rather special words or phrases that have come to mean something more to the people in the organization, than they would to others.
d) Important rituals.
e) Important symbols and artifacts (could include “language” discussed above).
f) Relationship with subordinates.
g) The organization’s appropriateness and relevance to organizational history and the culture.
You may also include any other OB topics from the text that specifically fits the movie you have chosen. This will be checked for plagiarism through Safe Assign.
