OBJECTIVES:
● To deepen your knowledge on a specific topic regarding the history of the built environment
● To increase your ability to conduct research and broaden your knowledge of available library
resources ASSIGNMENT:
Research your assigned precedent ( MIT Chapel Eero Saarinen, Cambridge, MA, 1955 and write a 1500 word
paper to share your findings. Like the examples studied in class, discuss the cultural, social and political contexts;
material and structural technology; relevant precedents and influences. Your research should use primary sources
(books, monographs, journal articles) and include images, drawings and diagrams to support your observations
and conclusions. Use your knowledge from ARCH 205 or your textbook to find building type comparisons. The
Peter Buchanan reading should serve as a model for your own work.
BIBLIOGRAPHY:
Your research should primarily conducted using the Morgan State, University of Maryland and Enoch Pratt Library
systems. At a minimum, works cited should include three (3) books and/or journal articles. All sources should be
properly quoted and cited (including web sources and images) using Chicago Style.
OUTLINE:
Before writing your ÕÉ≠†Њ†paper, about MIT Chapel Eero Saarinen, Cambridge, MA, 1955, must prepare an
outline of your research. Your outline should clearly state a summary of your subject, your main thesis, key
supporting points (34 groups of facts that back up the thesis) and a conclusion. This will require extensive reading.
No outline should be created without first gaining a significant body of knowledge regarding your topic.
