OVERVIEW OF THE MAGAZINE ASSIGNMENT: Each student will prepare a magazine focusing on selected topics relevant to the issue of violent crime. This project will assist you in thinking critically and creatively and will enhance your written work. Students will select the major theme of the magazine from the list below. These topics will be researched and written in a magazine format. Students will also decide issues of design (columns, graphics, art, photos, etc.).

Listed below are the possible topics for the magazine. You will need to choose one from this list.

Race, Ethnicity, and Violence
Deterrence and Violence
Serial Killing
Biology and Violence
Gun Control and Violence
Age and Violence
Video Games and Violence
Gender and Violence
Gangs and Violence
Flash Mobs
Domestic Terrorism
School Violence

*If none of these topics appeal to you and you have another topic in mind, please check with me to make sure that it is acceptable.

The magazine should be given an interesting title and include a table of contents, an introduction explaining the theme and the contents (minimum 2 pages), 2 short researched articles (minimum 3 pages each), comprising a total of 6 pages double spaced, and a conclusion (minimum 2 pages or 500 words) and references. Your magazine will therefore comprise a total of 10 pages minimum. You will not be penalized if your articles are longer than the required number of words and if you add images and web pages this may in fact be the case. Design the magazine any way you desire. Be creative! You will need to decide how the cover will look, the table of contents, and the organization of articles and visual materials. Each magazine should also contain 5 questions at the end of their magazine for others to consider.

The magazine must be typed, double-spaced, APA format (no abstract required). Use a maximum of 12 point font size and 1 inch margins all around. Those who do not follow this style will lose points. There is no penalty for exceeding the minimum length requirement. Make use of at least 5 library scholarly books and articles, and if you wish you can use in addition limited but credible internet sources. Your arguments should not be based primarily on internet or magazine article sources. Avoid magazine sources altogether unless there is an example of the research you are discussing. You must use citations whenever you refer to someone else’s ideas even if it is not a direct quote and you should be referring to research frequently.

Your magazine must:

introduce the paper and conclude effectively
contain an argument about the theme you have selected and the issues you have chosen to demonstrate that argument
provide a complete response to the theme you have chosen through the articles you write
express your argument clearly and persuasively
provide adequate supporting arguments, evidence, examples, and details to demonstrate your argument
demonstrate effective organization
use appropriate and direct language
acknowledge sources for quotes and ideas not your own through citations and references
use proper grammar, spelling, paragraph construction, and format
demonstrate originality and creativity

NOTE: It is not enough simply to state your opinion. All opinions must be supported with researched evidence from books, journals, and other sources. Your discussion must be drawn on research from scholarly books, journals and articles.
