There is growing recognition that traditional management practices have led to undersirable social and environmental
impacts, some of which in turn have threatened the economic viability of the hospitality and tourism industry.
The prosperity of the hospitality and tourism industry depends more and more upon the nautrual environment (World
Tourism Organisation 1996).
Therefore industry managers now face the challenges of creating a balance between economic growth and the
preservation (or enhancement) of environmentally sustainable processes.
