Throughout the term, you have researched a wide diversity of “Art Worlds” / art sectors. You have discovered many aspects of the art and creative sectors, how they
are managed, the various roles required within an organization and the many details that are very much a part of these art and creative sectors.

Your past assignments were an exploration of an arts sector that were of interest to you. You were open to new ideas and concepts of art worlds and/or art and creative
sectors and you were the creator of your own art world / creative sector. You will reflect on the choices you made in your research and will share your realizations
about what you discovered in that research.

You are to review your experiences with the content in this course and reflect personally to what you have discovered. Use your contributions to the discussions and
your observations of other students in your reflection.

Refer to your past assignments, particularly, (it will be attached to the project)

– Week 4: Personal Investigation of an Arts Sector (Art World)

– Week 6: Midterm – Identify an Art World

– Week 8: Personal Investigation of an Arts Sector (Arts World – Research &

Discussion)

In addition, you are to reflect on your journey through this class. Note, this is not a course evaluation, it is your personal experience expressed through a
reflective paper. This is about you and your experiences. Your final paper will be aminimum 4-page reflective paper (you may write more) on your experience in this
class. You will cite a minimum of 8 references from the readings, lectures, videos and/or Discussion responses to support your positions and perspectives. Include the
following parameters:

1. How has this class experience and your personal research enhanced your ability to understand the Arts and Creative Sectors?

a) Highlight specific aspects of the course that assisted you in this understanding.

b) How did your fellow students’ assignments and discussions contribute to your understanding?

2. What has changed in terms of your perspective of how you now see the “arts world” and/or ”creative sectors?

a) What specific arts sector and role would be of most interest to you?

b) How do you see the possibility of your role and possible involvement in an “arts world” or

creative sector in the future?

3. Did you encounter a “break-through moment” where you “saw” a perspective that previously was not in your experience? Describe your experience.

4. How has this class informed your identity as a possible participant in the “business of the arts”?

5. What other perspectives were prominent in your reflection?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

For your information – A review of the questions from the Art World assignments:

NOTE – The questions below are for your reflection only. These questions are not for the Final Reflection.

This assignment consists of identifying and describing an “art world,” as the concept is established in Howard Becker’s chapter entitled, “Art Worlds and Collective
Activity” (available on the course site). Drawing on Becker’s ideas, as well as those we have discussed in class during the first half of the quarter, you will write a
paper that contains the following three section:

1. identifies an art world by locating it historically, geographically, and socially

– who is primarily responsible for or identified with the “art”?

– who comprises the audience or consumer?

– where does this art-making happen?

– what time period are you looking at? what is the ‘history’ of this art world?

2. lists and explains the artistic/creative “products” that come out of this art world

– what are the kinds of art or creative items produced?

– what are important features of them with regards to aesthetics, conventions, standards, or expectations?

3. presents an overview of the “support structures” or collective/collaborative practices and entities involved

– who is involved beyond the primary “creator(s)” in the production, distribution, or use of the art? what other

‘roles’ are there?

– what organizations, systems, entities, etc. help to allow for this art world to exist?

The assignment will be evaluated according to the following details:

1. identifies an art world:

– explicit identification/naming of art world

– describe primary artist/creator role(s)

– establish “context” or geographic location of art world

– establish time-frame for art world

2. lists and explains artistic/creative products

– names and describe product(s)

– enrich the description with attention to aesthetics, conventions, standards or expectations for each product

3. presents an overview of “support structures”

– name and describe roles beyond “primary” artists/creative people listed in Section I.

– explain the presence/absence of other “support” structures, agencies, organizations, etc.
Essay: Observations on Film Art and Job Descriptions on Media Match

Introduction
This essay seeks to address the points and questions from Observation on Film Art based on the views of the author, David Bordwell documented on his blog in 2007 on
the topic “But What Kind of Art” in addition to reviewing the reading titled “Job Descriptions on Media Match” available on mediamatch USA Media Industry Magazine.
Reading 1: But what kind of art?
According to David Bordwell, film should not be considered as form of art because scholars in different fields have their own unique interpretation of film depending
on the accuracy of its cast (Thompsonn& Bordwell, 2010). David draws examples from instances in written, oral and experiments from different civilizations that point
to the fact that people who consider film as a form of art do not necessarily share the concept of what form of art it is.
The author points out that the answer to what kind of art is based on unique conceptions of the artist’s dimensions and that it is often difficult to find a common
ground among film makers, scholars, historian, critics and academicians on the subject question.
The second point outlined in this article relates to people’s varied, diverse and distorted views about cinema as an art by merely making assumptions based on the
other existing forms of artThompsonn & Bordwell, 2010). The validity of these varied, and diverse opinions of people about cinema as a form of art is justified by the
many connections in cinema that are drawn from photography, narrations, performances, pictures and audio visuals.
The author acknowledges cinema as a synthetic media that integrates all the ancient dimensions of art, which modify, nourish, and emphasis the ideas and theme of the
film, making it appear as a form of opera.
The other important point that stands out in the reading about what kind of art is arguments on waivers on the issue of cinema as an art. The author identifies the
arguments supporting cinema as an emotional art, as form of poetry, and as a performance based art, however, according to the author, the three analogies are simply
some of the best frameworks that are used to sensitize the audience of the differences and similarities that exist between cinema and artThompsonn & Bordwell, 2010).
Reading 2: Job Descriptions on Media Match
The second lecture reading is the job description on media match of an Art Director, my personal selection on the USA Media Industry Magazine. One of the questions the
reading seeks to address is what does Art directors do? The author describes an art director as the project manager of a film department whose role is to ensure that
the production design team’s vision of the film becomes a reality (USA Media Industry Magazine, 2017).
The other point that is addressed in the reading relates to the responsibilities of the Art director which has been identified to include budgeting, scheduling, and
facilitation of entire production team’s processes.
The author emphasizes that an art director is a highly skilled professional and with the ability to find practical solutions to creative challenges while at the same
time monitor the budget(USA Media Industry Magazine, 2017). Art directors are commonly engaged in the production of films, commercials and television dramas.
The second question in this reading is what the art director job is. The answer to this question begins by detailing the initial functions of the art director whose
work begins 4 to 5 months prior to the filming date. The answer to the second question further explains that the art director’s role extents at the beginning of cinema
shooting throughout the period until when the final schedule is delivered(USA Media Industry Magazine, 2017).

During the process of shooting the film, the author further suggests that the art director overlaps to include overseeing the analysis of all the film scripts and
identify those tasks that might require additional allocation of time and resources(USA Media Industry Magazine, 2017). Pressure to undertake all the project tasks
within the allocated budgets makes up art directly involved in all the project tasks together with the draughts men for the success of the project.
Another point addressed in this second reading is the importance of weekly meetings among all the project teams including the accountants, draughts men and the art
director whose role is identified as troubleshooting and coming up with cost effective and creative solutions to the challenges that occur when dealing with big film
productions(USA Media Industry Magazine, 2017). Overall, the art director mandate spans over several project stages, including construction, dressing and striking
and commissioning of all the film special effects.

Personal artist management
Personal artist management remains an exciting field for any 21st century entrepreneur who wishes to succeed in business. There are however a lot of personal skills
and business practices that must be considered if one wishes to succeed in this field.
Answer one
Firstly, the manager must understand what he or she will be doing as an artiste manager. Today, managers develop and unlock value for their band. They leverage the
brand equity in a process of creating direct revenue streams and strategic partnerships. They scheme wisely in the industry to establish good marketing budgets. This
is in short handling tasks that can be well described as ‘business development’
Answer two
Secondly, one must understand that the music business involves dealing with people and therefore it is mandatory to maintain a good rapport with people in a process of
building healthy business relationships. One should network, make friends and find business colleagues. Keeping grudges and having bad blood with people is not
advisable because the same people can use this to spoil your image leading to lose of potential clients. Managers must go out of their comfort zones to bring in
revenue for their artists. They should see to it that they perform live, go on tours, get publishing deals and getting their songs in film and T.V.
Answer 3
A). My role in this enterprise would be to manage artists so as to enable them be marketable, famous and profitable for both themselves and my company. I would also
establish a team of employees to enable me achieve the goals of the company. I would hire an entertainment lawyer and an entertainment accountant as key members of my
team.
B). I would use my lawyer every time I do business with record labels, publishers and booking agencies on behalf of my artist. I would encourage my accountant to keep
all financial details neatly arranged for future use.
C). I would discuss accounting procedures with my accountant so that he or she would be able to organize the company’s documents effectively. My lawyer would be
advised to exercise his smartness and knowledge of entertainment law with excellence. I would also consider a strong business plan and internal organization tools.
Answer 4
I have the necessary skills that may make this business successful. I take responsibility seriously and I would understand that having an artiste to manage means that
they depend on you to succeed. I have the work ethic and drive needed, dedication, patience, wise decision making and problem solving strategy.
I would contribute to the success of this company my making sure that I use all my personal skills. I would also oversee all operations and counter check if all
employees do their work appropriately to avoid errors.
Answer 5
I learnt something new in artist management: That the role of artist managers has changed with time. In the past years they used to only concern themselves with acting
between label and band. Today, they develop and unlock value for their band.
I have majorly learnt that the main thing required in this business is strategy, knowledge, good relationships with people and clients as opposed to having a lot of
money as the core tool of investment as I had earlier thought.
Answer 6
A). www.tunecore.com/blog/2011/02/artist-managers-must -understand-their-role-is-now-business-development.html This website was obtained from Google. It provides the
information for the role of artist managers and how to become a successful manager in the first growing music industry.
https://smartbandmanagement.com/how-to-start-an-artist-management-company This website provides information on everything needed to start an artist management company
and succeed as an artist manager.
‘Educational guide for music managers and self managed artists’-This eBook provides guidelines on how to be a productive manager in music and gives guidelines on how
artists can effectively manage themselves.
B). The above resources reveal that careers in arts are challenging and they need a lot of strategies and resilience for one may at one time fail to achieve goals so
you need a resilient spirit to overcome challenges.
C). These resources informed me that there are a lot of artists who are not making it in the music industry not because they do not have strong talent but because they
do not have good managers or they do not know how to manage themselves with appropriate strategies

Various categories are crucial in the establishment of the nature of the film. The types include direct contact, participation, and performance. Observational
filmmaking ensures that the main discoveries and actions are usually seen through the lived events. The nature of the truth is brought about by the participation of
the individuals that are telling the being filmed. It also helps in the establishment of the performance that is the determination of the subjectivity and objectivity
of the storyline. The film was shot through the documentation of different stories as they were outlined by patients in the nursing homes. The use of the headphones
as the symbolic item that provides the satisfaction to the seniors indicates the importance of the film. It is clear that each and every individual requires a quiet
moment in their lives where they just get to enjoy the music.
Roles And Responsibilities
The people making the film have certain responsibilities including; showing and telling through the construction of an excellent narrative, ensure that the film is
incorporated with the relevant commentary and the obligation of making sure that story line is useful. The camera man has to make sure that they capture the right
images so that the audience can get the opportunity to enjoy the film. The sound engineers maintain the sound so that it is not too loud or too slow. The producers
combine the storyline and make the narrative to be efficient in the film that is produced. The editing is carried out to help in making sure that only the relevant
parts of the movie are aired at any particular time. The distribution of the various activities is conducted by the producers of the film.
Audience
The expected audience is the targeted group within which the information from the movie is expected to reach to in the long run. In Alive Still, the audience is each
and every family member who may have seniors who have Alzheimer’s. It illustrates how the use of the headphones to listen to music would result to the aspects of
bringing back some memories. Music is good for the soul and thus when one listens to their favorite songs helps in taking them to a happy place. The audience gets to
receive a suggestion on the use of music whenever they are under pressure. The filmmakers bring the audience into the story through the various interviews that are
conducted along the storyline.
The Business World
For one to successfully produce a film of this nature, certain things are to be put into consideration. The management of the resources that are incorporated in the
production services. It also includes the aspects of accountability and leadership in the issue of making sure that the goal is achieved in the long run. The
accounting perspective will be vital since the funds that are required should be budgeted for, and the different cost spent to be responded. The aspect of
accountability is important in the successful production of the film. The economic conditions also influence the production of the movie since they help ion the
determination of whether the audience will appreciate the production or not. It also assists in the wording and imaging of the film due to the diversification of
culture and appreciation of the different origins of the people in the society.
Personal Reflection
Documentary films are in most cases for educational purposes and at the same time helps in creating awareness. Therefore, for an individual to commit to such a
production, there has to a lot of research that is undertaken. For instance, in Alive Stills, different seniors are interviewed in the film, and they are all from
different regions. The study is important so that the facts that are included in the movie are real and thus there will be no misrepresentation of facts. Personally, I
would contribute in the health sector through participation in taking care of the seniors. Through the introduction of music, it makes it easier to deal with the
individuals, and at the same time, it helps in giving them a new meaning of life.
