Philosophy Assignment paper
In response to one of the (sets of) questions below, you are to write a three or four page dialogue. The paper will be assessed based on four criteria: writing, reasoning, clarity, and originality.
Writing: Is the writing appropriate for a college course (no spelling, punc- tuation or grammatical errors, the paper exhibits a clear structure, etc.)?
Reasoning: Are there any obvious reasoning errors?
Clarity: Are the ideas clearly presented? Is it obvious what the conclusion is, and what the arguments for it are?
Originality: Are the ideas presented the author’s own (are they presented in the author’s own words)? How original are the criticisms leveled by the “opponent” of the author’s views?
1. Singer and Fox think that eating animals is morally problematic, while Machan thinks it is permissible. Who’s right? Why or why not?
2. Noonan and Warren agree that abortion is a right–to–life issue, yet they disagree about whether abortion is permissible or not. Who’s right? Why?
3. Thomson and Hursthouse think that considerations other than the right–to–life determine whether abortion is permissible, yet they dis- agree about when abortion is permissible or not. Who’s right? Why?
4. How should we think about gun control? Polsby and Huemer agree that we should be allowed to have guns, yet they don’t agree entirely as to why. Is one of their cases better than Dixon’s case against owning guns? Why or why not?
