★ In order to receive extra credit for the Theatre Club Skits in English II, you must complete the following requirements:
○ You may receive a Bonus of 5 Summative Points if you:
■ Attend the play and stay for the entire duration of the performance.
■ Take a Selfie—Take a picture of yourself holding the program in front of the stage or performance area.
■ Write a 1 page review of your favorite skit performance/s using MLA formatting rules (12pt font, double spaced etc.). *You may also write about more than one skit (as a comparison essay or otherwise).
● Please make sure to include the required steps outlined below:
★ How to Write a Play Review
○ Use MLA Guidelines along with your 4-Lined heading at the top left hand corner.
■ Place a header on each page with your last name and page number
■ Use MLA rules: Appropriate font style, 12pt font, double spacing etc.
■ Write your review using 3rd person, but may include the “I” voice.
○ Short Introduction Paragraph – General Information
■ Introduce the name of the skit, place of performance, date of performance, director and actors.
■ In a few sentences talk about the basic theme of the skit and discuss the general plot.
○ Body Paragraphs 1/2 – The Acting
■ React to the overall performances of the major characters in the play. Be sure to use their names.
● Discuss if they were believable, true to the skit and their roles etc
■ The following items should be discussed in your review. You should respond with more than “yes” or “no” answersby explaining the reasons for your opinions.
● Discuss one specific major character in the skit that stood out to you.
○ Explain what made them stand out as a character.
○ What was it that appealed to you about the performance and their role throughout the play?
○ What made the character believable to you? Why did you relate to them?
● Explain howthe following aspects of acting were used to enhance the scenes of the play:
○ Voice: Did the actors project their voices loudly enough? Did they exhibit a good use of enunciation of words and appropriate accents? Were their voices monotone or did they use proper inflection?
○ Body Language: Were the gestures, movement, and facial expressions suitable to the characters and their lines?
○ Emotions: Did the actors express appropriate emotions through their acting and body language? Were these emotions realistic and true to the context of the lines?
○ Short Conclusion Paragraph – Your Reaction
■ What was your overall opinion of the skit? Explain.
■ Avoid generic phrases like: “two thumbs up” or “3 out of 5 stars”.
■ Did this inspire you to watch another play of similar genre or by the same group of actors and director? Explain why or why not?
■ Include a closing sentence that wraps up the essay and sums up your overall opinion or recommendation to the reader.
○ DO:
■ Backup all your opinions with valid reasons and examples from the skit.
■ Be objective, fair and constructive. Indicate good points along with those you felt needed improvement.
■ Be sincere. Believe what you say.
■ Use MLA Format for your heading and margins.
○ DON’T:
■ Don’t be overly critical. Approach a performance with an attitude of enjoying it.
■ Don’t be arrogant. Be humble, kind, and remember the challenges of doing live theatre
