2000 words, excluding references (+ or – 10%). 40% of total marks for the course.
Criteria & Marking:
The essay is intended to encourage writing skills, develop research ability, and provide the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of selected topics. Students will be required to write one essay during the semester. The essay will be due at 5.00pm on Tuesday of week 10 (October 4). The essay should be no more than 2,000 words in length (+ or – 10%) excluding references. It should be typewritten, have font size 12, doublespaced, have adequate margins to enable comments by the marker, and follow conventional academic formalities in relation to notes and references. Students may use any recognised academic referencing system, but it must be used correctly and consistently.

Essays will be assessed on the basis of their presentation, relevance, and clarity of argument; extent and quality of research; analysis of issues; structure, and standard of writing, grammar and expression. Do not base essays largely on internet sources; evidence of having read academic books and journals is required. Internet and other popular media sources, like all sources, should be a) clearly relevant to your argument; and b) make up no more than approximately twenty percent (20%) of the sources you use.
Research essays thus will be assessed on the following criteria:
(1) Clear argument (thesis statement) in the introduction, appropriate structure for the essay
(2) Adequate and correct citations (and correct reference list)
(3) Breadth of relevant research; appropriate and quality source materials
(4) Critical understanding of the topic; insightfulness of the analysis
(5) Proper paragraphing and formatting; clarity of writing, including correct grammar, spelling, punctuation.
