Prepare a paper on Food Retailing Promotional Techniques
For this activity, you will visit a grocery store to investigate promotional strategies the retailer is using to encourage customers to buy more product. You may visit any grocery store/supermarket (and you are welcome to combine this activity with your weekly food shopping).
At the store, look for strategies the store is using to promote products and increase sales to customers. Here are some examples of things to consider: store layout, product placement, sales and special promotions, loyalty programs, coupons, product sampling, and cross merchandising (the showcasing of products from different categories in close proximity to suggest purchasing ideas — such as stocking tortilla chips next to avocados). [Note: There are many other promotional strategies used as well and you are not limited to just ideas listed.]
Activity Directions:
In the beginning of your paper, be sure to note the details of your visit including store name and address and date and time of your visit. If you choose to visit multiple retailers, be sure to note details for each one and identify which retailer each of your examples is from.
During your visit(s), you will be expected to find 4 examples of promotional techniques the store is utilizing to increase sales. For each example, take a picture of what you see in the store that showcases the technique (given the requirement of a picture, music and other non-visual strategies should be avoided). In your Activity Paper, include each picture and then write a paragraph explaining the strategy and how it works to increase sales. Outside research is encouraged to support your explanations of how strategies work. Be sure to cite any sources used and follow proper APA formatting.
Bonus:
For one extra-credit point, write an additional paragraph suggesting a promotional technique the store is not utilizing and why you think they should be. Be sure to explain how the technique could be used to increase sales and cite any sources used in your answer.
