Primary Source Analysis Paper

INSTRUCTION:

Students will select a primary source document from a list of approved documents and write a short (4-5 page) analysis. Essays should address a specific list of questions, as outlined in the Primary Source Analysis Worksheet. In addition, each essay MUST include a thesis statement. This statement should appear at the end of your introductory paragraph, and will establish the argument of your essay.

Your job in this essay is to evaluate the usefulness of the primary source to further the reader’s understanding of the time period in which it was written.

This paper is not a summary of the primary source, but rather an analysis. This means that you must read the document critically and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, based on your understanding of the time period. Your paper must be written in essay form, and NOT simply answering the questions from the Analysis Worksheet.

Students may use their textbooks, other reference books and quality, academic websites to aid in this analysis. Each paper should cite at least three of these secondary sources in the bibliography.

Papers should be double-spaced, written 12-point font, with one-inch margins, and a minimum of 1000 words. The essays do not need a cover page; a simple heading at the top is sufficient.
