Instructions on Assessment
In Part A, students are required to address the questions below by using academic theory and concepts. (Some suggested resources covering aspects of the
case have been posted on Blackboard as a start). In Part B, students are required to apply overall learnings from the module to their own personal
development. Students are required to research the business partnership between China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) with Pirelli, the Italian
tyre maker.

PART A
1. With reference to the academic literature and using your analysis of relevant environmental factors, suggest the most important external issues and
trends driving the partnership of ChemChina with Pirelli, Italian tire maker. In which areas are the expected internal benefits and synergies for both
companies? Why are the Chinese and the Italian governments involved? PESTEL analysis for both ChemChina and Pirelli required. (20 marks)
2. With reference to the academic literature, how would you describe this partnership? Explain the risks associated with this choice of partnership.
Compare and contrast this choice with Pirelli’s earlier partnership with PT Astra. Justify your view. (20 marks)
3. By applying appropriate theory and using evidence from your research of these companies, analyse the national and corporate cultures involved. Speculate
on the impact of both on this ‘partnership’ between ChemChina with Pirelli. (20 marks)
4. Drawing upon academic literature and theory, critically discuss the possible effects, both positive and negative, of exchange rate movements on the
deal. (20 marks)

PART B
5. Identify three (3) specific aspects or challenges of doing business internationally that you have come to appreciate through the seminars or Expert
Lectures on this module. Explain why these are significant to you personally and to the future of international business. (20 marks)

Word limits and penalties for assignments
If the assignment is within +10% of the stated word limit no penalty will apply. The word count is to be declared on the front page of your assignment and
the assignment cover sheet. The word count does not include:

• Appropriate tables, figures and illustrations
• Quotes from interviews and focus groups.
• Reference list, and Bibliography
• Appendices, and Glossary

Please note, in text citations [e.g. (Smith, 2011)] and direct secondary quotations [e.g. “dib-dab nonsense analysis” (Smith, 2011 p.123)] are INCLUDED in
the word count.
If this word count is falsified, students are reminded that under ARTA regulation, this will be regarded as academic Misconduct.
If the word limit of the full assignment exceeds the +10% limit, deduction of 10% of the total marks available for the assessment (i.e.100%) shall be
deducted from the assessment mark.
For clarity: a piece of work which would have scored 65% but that has a word count greater than 10% of the prescribed word limit will be allocated 55%; a
piece of work which would have scored 45% but that has a word count greater than 10% of the prescribed word limit will be allocated 35%.
The following format should be used throughout: Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, consecutive page numbers.
The essay should be fully referenced throughout using the APA style of referencing. The APA style (6th edition) of referencing uses the author’s name and
the date of the publication. In-text citations give brief details of the work you are referring to in your text. References are listed at the end of the
text in alphabetical order by the author’s name.
