Argumentative Paper
All candidates must complete a position paper (30 points) on a current issue in special education. The first step in the process is to identify a topic from the descriptions below, then read the article(s) accompanying the selected topic. Using the outline template as a guide, research the major positions on your topic using a professional journal database such as WilsonWeb or Ebsco. The criteria and format for the outline are attached to this syllabus. Next, develop the paper using the outline. For the paper, clearly summarize the major positions on your topic, then specifically state your position on the selected issue supporting it with at least three research-based reasons. Papers should be 5 full pages in length, double spaced, excluding one page for references. Three professional journals are required as references (e.g., education journals; see “miscellaneous resources” for suggested journals). Candidates must include in their citations at least one reference not provided by the instructor. Candidates are to write papers using APA style. (See the APA website in the miscellaneous section of the course outline for more information on APA style.) Papers will be graded according to the rubric attached to this syllabus. Topics other than those listed must be approved by the instructor prior to submitting the paper’s outline.
