The utility of the DSM has long been a subject of controversy and much heated debate. Many argue that the diagnostic categories are too limited, while others argue
that the entire DSM promotes the continued stigma of mental illness. The proposed changes to the upcoming DSM-5, scheduled to publish in May 2013, may address and
correct some of these problems; however, many in the mental health field have valid concerns.
