Public Health

Week 5 Assignment

Informing or creating policy is an important aspect of public health. One of the 10 Essential Services covered this week relates to the planning, development, and creation of policies. This includes efforts to advocate for political, social, or economic policies and programs that will improve health in diverse populations.

In week 4, you addressed insurance coverage for three different clinical preventive services. You now move from an academic focus to an advocacy focus. In this assignment, you create a one-page letter that you will send by email to a legislator or other policy maker to advocate for coverage of these three clinical preventive services in a specified diverse population.

This must be a real letter to a real policy-maker. Your assignment will include a description of the process of creating and sending of the letter:

By day 6, post your assignment, including the following:

  • The name and address of the person to whom the letter was sent. Explain why you chose this person and this population for your advocacy. What impact do you believe this person may have on what you are advocating for?
  • Describe how this letter could work in conjunction with other advocacy efforts to promote coverage of these clinical preventive services. What other advocacy options might work, and why?
  • Attach the letter, which must be a formal letter including the date, correct and complete address of the person, and your signature at the bottom
