Public Health Analysis

Learning Objective

Examine a current issue or controversy in public health and analyze current public health empirical evidence addressing the topic

Instructions

  1. Select a public health issue that you find interesting. The Healthy People 2020 resource may be a good starting place to help you with identifying a relevant topic: https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/global-health.
  2. Students will conduct a literature review on the selected public health issue selected. Students will review a minimum of 3 or more peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles (from at least two different scholarly journals) and a minimum of 3 or more popular press/news articles (from at least two different media sources) on the public health issue that was identified in #1 above . The scholarly articles and popular press articles should have been published in the last 3 years.
  3. Students will write a 3-5 page analysis paper (double spaced, one inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman typeface) on the topic. Within the paper, students should: (1) summarize the empirical evidence available, (2) compare and contrast the information presented in the peer-reviewed articles and the popular press articles, and (3) discuss the overall implications of these findings for population health, and (4) incorporate at least 2 separate connections to course content. Be sure to cite specific articles within your paper so that it is clear which resource(s) you are addressing in a given sentence or paragraph. Please do not write the paper in first person. Strive to write with an objective tone. American Psychological Association (APA) style, the standard writing style utilized in public health and the social and behavioral sciences, is recommended but not required. A sample APA style paper will be provided. Microsoft Word also offers an APA style template.
