Introduction
Your future clinical decisions should be made utilising robust and up-to-date evidence and your own
critical appraisal. Understanding the epidemiological underpinnings of this evidence -base is an
essential skillfor all medical graduates. This assessmenttask requires you to thoroughly investigate and
critique epidemiological studies ofdinical relevance and develop yourability to providea rational basis
for consideration ofdisease prevention, health creation and clinical decision-making. Furthermore, you
will develop and hone the skills necessary to read and interpret researdi presented in medical journals
and furtherconsolidate your knowlecge of epidemiological terms, principles and methods-
In part 1, you will begin with the review of an experimental epidemiological study- There will be 3
papers released on CloudDeakin. You should read all 3 – but will ON LY need to choose 1 of these for
this assessment-
In part 2, you will use your critical appraisal and clinical evidence gathering skills to investigate the
findings of earlier observational studies related to the paper you chose in Part 1.
Part 3 of this assessment task requires you to relate the research to current clinical practice. You will
need to utilise the library and online resources extensiver as well as the medical librarian
and other online resources to gain the full breadth of learning opportunities this
