Slavery as an institution is often presented as a race based form of oppression. However, there are different narratives that suggest that perhaps race was not the primary reason for creation and expansion of the slave system.
This week I would like you to read the article “King Cotton” that dissects this notion and answer the following questions:
1. Identify at least 3 things that surprised you in this article about slavery?
2. How did the author describe the role of cotton on the evolution of the slave system?
3. How did race and class impact the slave system and its evolution?
